Lucinda Williams Closes Another Spectacular Americana Music Festival

Lucinda Williams
Three-time Grammy Award-winner Lucinda Williams closed the 15th annual Americana festival for the 2nd year in a row last Sunday at the almost complete City Winery sounding better than ever. The show was taped to air on SiriusXM Outlaw Country and included guests Elizabeth Cook and Amos Lee. Williams’ band was anchored by spectacular drummer Butch Norton and bassist David Sutton. Wallflowers guitarist, Stuart Mathis, rounded out the quartet and will be joining them on their fall tour.

Williams’ almost 2-hour set included old favorites as well as songs from her new project, her first-ever double studio album, Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone (out September 30 via Highway 20 Records/Thirty Tigers).

Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone features 20 new songs, with 18 written solely by Williams. For the album’s opening track, “Compassion”, Williams composed music for one of her father’s (poet Miller Williams) poems. The album closes with a rendition of JJ Cale’s “Magnolia”. The album is being streamed right now at NPR Music. Listen here.

Americana Music association president, Jed Hilly, announced next years dates for the festival, September 16-20th 2015 and Williams and bands 3 night stand at the City Winery Nashville November 24th through the 26th. Check out more Americana highlights below. —Story and photos by Brad Lykken
