“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” soars to second-highest opening with $220 million weekend

Disney(LOS ANGELES) — Star Wars: The Last Jedi posted the second-largest opening weekend of all-time, behind its predecessor The Force Awakens, which debuted to $247.9 million in 2015. It also became the second film — along with The Force Awakens — to gross more than $100 million on its opening day.

Additionally, The Last Jedi — starring Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Carrie Fisher, in her last Star Wars appearance — opened in previews on Thursday and notched the second-largest preview ever with $45 million

Overseas, the film earned an estimated $230 million, making it the 10th largest international opening and the fifth largest worldwide debut with $450 million total.

Fox’s animated feature Ferdinand — featuring the voices of John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Anthony Anderson and Bobby Cannavale — finished in second place with an estimated $13.3 million. Disney’s Coco took third place, earning an estimated $9.7 million.

In fourth place was Wonder, grabbing an estimated $5.4 million. Justice League rounded out the top five with an estimated $4.1 million weekend.

Lucasfilm and ABC are owned by Disney.
