Marvel Studios(LOS ANGELES) — Fandango has announced that Black Panther has become the best performing Marvel Studios movie during the first 24 hours of ticket sales, unseating previous record holder Captain America: Civil War. The latter film, incidentally in which Chadwick Boseman made his debut as the mysterious hero T’Challa/Black Panther, went on to make $179 million in its opening weekend in May of 2016.

Black Panther, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira and Forest Whitaker, opens February 16.

According to the ticket site, Black Panther‘s standalone movie debut bested Civil War‘s tickets ordered in the first 24 hours after tickets went on sale Monday. “It’s one of the biggest and most anticipated movies to ever open in the month of February, and its trailers have electrified the Internet,” Fandango Editor Erik Davis reports.

What’s more, a Fandango survey of more than 8,000 moviegoers pegged Panther as one of 2018’s two most anticipated movies, second only to another Marvel Studios feature: May 4’s superhero-stocked Avengers: Infinity War. Fans named Boseman the most-anticipated stand-alone superhero.

Meanwhile, in related Avengers news, one of the biggest hits of 2017, the blockbuster-minting studio announced Wednesday that Thor: Ragnarok will be released on digital HD and 4K Ultra HD as well as Disney’s Movies Anywhere service on Feb. 20.

The movie starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, and Tessa Thompson, will hit 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray™ on March 6; both will be packed with supplemental features, commentaries from the filmmakers, behind-the-scenes peeks and more.

Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
