Seth Meyers goes in on Hollywood sexual harassment scandal in Golden Globes monologue

Photo by: Lloyd Bishop/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — Seth Meyers spends much of his time on his late night show criticizing President Trump, but last night, as host of the Golden Globe awards, he set politics aside to discuss the sexual harassment scandals that have rocked Hollywood.

“Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen,” Meyers said. “Happy New Year Hollywood. It’s 2018 — marijuana is finally allowed, sexual harassment finally isn’t…it’s gonna be a good year.”

“By the way, a special hello to hosts of other upcoming awards shows who are watching me tonight like the first dog they shot into outer space,” he cracked.

“There’s a new era underway and I can tell because it has been years since a white man has been this nervous in Hollywood,” Meyers continued. “For the male nominees in the room, this is the first time in three months it won’t be terrifying to hear your name read out.”

“This was the year of big little lies and ‘get out,'” said Meyers. “And also the television series Big Little Lies and the movie Get Out.’”

Meyers referred to disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein as “the elephant not in the room.”  He then said, “Harvey Weinstein isn’t here tonight…I’ve heard rumors he’s crazy and difficult to work with.  But don’t worry — he’ll be back in 20 years, when he becomes the first person booed during the In Memoriam.'”

Meyers also took on Kevin Spacey who, after facing allegations of being a sexual predator, was forced to leave his show House of Cards and was replaced in the movie All the Money in the World by Christopher Plummer.

“I was happy to hear they’re going to do another season of House of Cards,” cracked Meyers. “Is Christopher Plummer available for that too? I hope he can do a southern accent because Kevin Spacey sure couldn’t.”  When the audience “ooed,” Meyers said, “Oh, is that too mean? To Kevin Spacey?”

Meyers also dissed Spacey during a segment he did that was a takeoff on his Late Night bit “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell,” enlisting stars like Billy Eichner, Issa Rae, Jessica Chastain and Amy Poehler to give the punchlines to jokes he set up.

For the bit with Eichner, Meyers said, “Call Me by Your Name is nominated for best motion picture. It’s a gay coming-of-age film.”

Eichner then gave this punchline: “Said Kevin Spacey: ‘You lost me at ‘of age.’”

But Meyers did manage to bring it around to politics when he mentioned Oprah Winfrey as one of that night’s honorees.

“Oprah…in 2011 I told some jokes about our current president at the White House Correspondents Dinner — jokes about how he was unqualified to be president — and some have said that night convinced him to run. So if that’s true, I just want to say: ‘Oprah, you will never be president! You do not have what it takes!'”

“And Hanks! Where is [Tom] Hanks? You will never be vice president! You are too mean and unrelatable.”

“Now,” he said, “we just wait and see.”
