“Frasier” actor John Mahoney dies at 77

Vera Anderson/WireImage(CHICAGO, IL) — John Mahoney, famous for his role on the hit TV series Frasier, has passed away at the age of 77. The veteran actor died yesterday, Feb. 4, in Chicago, his agent confirmed to ABC News.

For 11 seasons  on Frasier, Mahoney played Martin Crane, the grouchy but lovable father to sons Frasier, played by Kelsey Grammer and Niles, played by David Hyde Pierce. He was nominated for two Emmys for the role.

Mahoney was born in Blackpool, England, but moved to the United States as a young man. He was a long-time member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, where he starred in a number of plays before and after his run on Frasier. In 1986, he won a Tony Award for his role in a revival of John Guare’s The House of Blue Leaves.

He also appeared in such big-screen films as Tin Men, Barton Fink, Moonstruck and Eight Men Out, among others. He returned to the small screen this decade for a recurring role in the show Hot in Cleveland.

According to Variety, Mahoney was in hospice care when he passed away. The actor had never married.
