Tom Hardy freaks out in sneak peek of Spider-Man spin-off “Venom”

Frank Masi – ©2017 CTMG. All Rights Reserved. (NEW YORK) — Sony has just released a teaser for its Marvel Comics-based movie Venom, a Spider-Man spinoff.

Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, a jaded journalist who becomes the host of a parasitic alien being that turns him into the fearsome, shape-shifting, black creature named Venom.

Venom made his debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 in May of 1988 and, while he started as a villain, the morphing character has morphed into an anti-hero.

The snippet doesn’t actually show Venom, but it does feature Hardy undergoing a CAT scan, during which he freaks out and — judging by the blackness creeping up through his skin — starts to transform.

“We all have our own problems, our own issues. ” Hardy as Brock says in voiceover, as his pulse starts to race and he screams. “…Our own…demons!!”

Sony Pictures owns the rights to the Venom character, but shares the rights — with Disney-owned Marvel Studios — to Spider-Man, as played by Tom Holland in Marvel Studios Cinematic Universe. So it’s not known whether Spidey himself will appear in Venom.

The geekverse is speculating that the movie could depict the events of a limited-run comic series called Venom: Lethal Protector, in which the character was more of a crime-fighting vigilante operating in San Francisco — far away from the web-slinger’s New York City home.

Venom, which also stars Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson, and Rogue One‘s Riz Ahmed, opens Oct. 5.

Sony Pictures is also working on another Spidey-verse spin-off, Silver and Black — about the female characters Silver Sable and Black Cat — which is slated for a February 8, 2019 release date.

Marvel is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
