Jordan Peele says his and Daniel Kaluuya’s Oscar nods for “Get Out” are “bigger than us”

Todd Williamson/Getty Images(HOLLYWOOD) — With the 90th Academy Awards taking place this Sunday, Oscar nominees Jordan Peele and Daniel Kaluuya are expressing some of their mounting excitement for the upcoming event.

Kaluuya received a Best Actor nomination for his role in the Peele-directed social-thriller Get Out, and the honor was magnified because he truly believed in “Jordan’s vision” for the film.

“When I was reading it — because I really believe in this — I was like, ‘I really believe in this! Am I weird? Is it weird like? Am I a leper? I don’t know! I think this is great.'” Kaluuya tells ABC News.

“I think this is such a special script and it’s going to be such a special film. And I just felt that in my gut and for it to be recognized and to be at this space — uncompromisingly — you know, a complete visualization of Jordan’s vision.”

Like his film’s star, Peele, who is up for three Oscars — Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay — also feels humbled and honored by the recognition, adding that everyone “put their heart and soul” in the project not knowing “there was going to be a reward at the end.”

But, while it’s great to be recognized, Peele says the real honor will be those who are later inspired by his work and accomplishments.

“For me, the thing is that this kind of recognition goes bigger than me. It goes bigger than us,” Peele says. “It really goes out there [to] all the people who need a piece of inspiration in their lives.”

“I had that when I was a kid when Whoopi Goldberg won for Best Supporting Actress for Ghost,” adds Peele. “And to now have that come full circle is just the best.”

The 90th Academy Awards airs live Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
