FGL’s first #1 pop hit was clearly "Meant to Be"

ABC/Kelsey McNealIt’s been eight years since a country act has topped Billboard’s pop airplay chart, but now Florida Georgia Line has fixed that. This week, FGL’s collaboration with Bebe Rexha, “Meant to Be,” ascends to #1 on the Radio Songs tally.

In 2010, it was Lady Antebellum who spent two weeks at the pop pinnacle with “Need You Now.” Only one other country artist has ever accomplished that feat on this particular chart: Taylor Swift took “You Belong to Me” to the top in 2009, paving the way for her breakout success in the genre.

Meanwhile, “Meant to Be” spends its third week at #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100, which also takes sales and streaming into account.  Over on the Hot Country Songs chart, the genre-blurring duet spends its 19th week at #1, tying a record Leroy Van Dyke set with “Walk On By” in the sixties. Both songs are now the third biggest hits in the survey’s history.

Next up, FGL will try to break their own record they set in 2012-2013 with their debut single, “Cruise.” It spent 24 weeks at the top, making it the chart’s #2 hit overall. Sam Hunt hangs on to the all-time record, having spent 34 weeks at #1 last year with “Body Like a Back Road.”
