Freeform/Ed Herrera(NEW YORK) — On tonight’s episode of The Bold Type, viewers finally get to meet Babs, the hard-drinking estranged mother of Scarlet magazine fashion assistant Sutton Brady.
Meghann Fahy, who plays Sutton, says the mother-daughter reunion episode — which also involves a road trip with Sutton’s besties Jane and Kat — is one of her favorite ones yet.
“This episode is a big one for Sutton and I was really excited about it because it was an opportunity to learn more about her and where she came from,” Fahy tells ABC Radio. “And I love road trips so it was really cool that we got to incorporate all of those things into this one episode.”
While Sutton is typically known for her sunny sense of humor and ability to make light of things, Fahy says we’ll see a more emotional side to her when she confronts Babs about their relationship.
“Learning about Babs is hugely important in terms of understanding why Sutton is the way she is, a little bit, and she has a really, really lovely moment with her mother where she gets to kind of speak her truth and I think that’s a really beautiful thing to see,” she says.
So what prompts Sutton to reconnect with Babs? She needs her birth certificate in order to get a passport in time for Paris Fashion Week. Paris is a major career milestone for Sutton and we’ll also see how reaching that goal will affect her.
“I think that when she gets there and she finally achieves this lifelong goal of hers, some other elements of her life will sort of fall into place and it will give her some really important perspective,” Fahy says.
