MCA NashvilleWith Golden Hour, Kacey Musgraves took the biggest creative risks of her career so far. But it’s a gamble that’s paid off: She won CMA Album of the Year honors in November, and Sunday, she’s up for four Grammys at the ceremony in Los Angeles.
“It can be a little bit daunting anytime that you step out and try to change your game up or take a little bit of a creative risk,” Kacey tells ABC Radio. “Not that my album is risky by any means. But you know, with the other stuff that I’ve done, it’s a little different.”
“And so I had slight trepidation in ways,” she admits. “Being like, I don’t want to scare off the people that love country music and have been with me since the beginning… And it was really important for me to figure out how to blend my old world with my new world and my new inspirations.”
Kacey’s up in three country categories at the 61st Grammys: Best Country Album, Best Country Solo Performance for the track “Butterflies,” and Best Country Song, for the cut “Space Cowboy.”
She’s also a favorite to take home the prestigious, all-genre Album of the Year trophy.
“There’s all this other music out there that I love so much, but my heart is — I love country music…” Kacey clarifies. “So I think it takes a little bit of b**** to try to move forward and forge new paths for yourself. But that’s how you grow creatively.”
“And you can bring new people with you, and it’s okay if you leave some behind,” she adds. “Maybe they’ll like the next record… Music is supposed to change form.”
Kacey’s also set to perform on the show, which starts at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
