Jennifer Nettles uses "I Can Do Hard Things" to start a movement

ABC/Randy HolmesJennifer Nettles is using her new song, “I Can Do Hard Things,” to encourage women to tell their stories — and develop communities where they can do just that.

“This song took on a life quickly and unexpectedly,” Jennifer explains. “For me, in writing it, I was just writing my own Truth and story. But what I have come to see is that so many women share this Truth, and that inspired me to make an invitation.”

That invitation comes in the form of a black-and-white video for the song, filmed in Nashville and Brooklyn. It features eight women who all give a glimpse into their lives.

You’ll be able to get your first look at the clip Friday during the 10 a.m. hour of NBC’s Today with Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford. The full video will follow Friday on YouTube, but you can watch a short public service announcement about Jennifer’s project now.

“When you share your own story, you own your power,” she says of the undertaking. “And when you own your power, it is harder for someone to take it from you.”

“When you share in community,” Jennifer continues, “you protect each other’s power and that makes it even harder for someone to take it from you.”

The song that inspired the new movement, “I Can Do Hard Things,” is available to stream or download now.
