Thought ‘Game of Thrones” battle was too dark? That’s on you, says show’s cinematographer

HBO/Vladimir Furdik(LOS ANGELES) — After many complained that last Sunday’s Battle of Winterfell was too dark to decipher what was going on, Game of Thrones cinematographer Fabien Wagner has sounded off.

In short, he says it’s on you.

“A lot of the problem is that a lot of people don’t know how to tune their TVs properly,” Wagner told Wired U.K., adding, “A lot of people also unfortunately watch it on small iPads, which in no way can do justice to a show like that anyway.”

He has a point: most people don’t change settings on their TVs after they buy them, and yes, they should

And increasingly, viewers are streaming their favorite shows on their phones, while on the bus or wherever.

Wagner explained executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss insisted on the color palette of the episode, called “The Long Night.”

“The showrunners decided that this had to be a dark episode,” Wagner said. “We’d seen so many battle scenes over the years — to make it truly impactful and to care for the characters, you have to find a unique way of portraying the story.”

He also noted to TMZ that people shouldn’t be watching the series in a well-lit environment, adding of the scene, “I know it wasn’t too dark because I shot it.”
