ABC/Image Group LAMaren Morris, Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby are blazing trails as The Highwomen, and a major source of inspiration for the new group comes from another powerful female musician: Sheryl Crow.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Maren reflects on growing up in the nineties while Sheryl was a dominant force in music, and credits her for helping to open the door for the modern female super group.
“There wouldn’t be the Highwomen without Sheryl Crow. Her music was so impactful in the nineties, when there weren’t a ton of female voices that were writers and musicians and were saying something that mattered,” Maren explains.
She adds, “And the beauty for me was that she didn’t have to choose between artistic integrity and being commercially viable and catchy.”
At the 2019 Newport Folk Festival, Sheryl joined The Highwomen onstage, sang “If It Makes You Happy” with Maren and Brandi, and also teamed with Maren to sing their current collaboration, “Prove You Wrong,” the recorded version of which also features Stevie Nicks.
“Prove You Wrong” is featured on Sheryl’s new duets album Threads, set for release on August 30.
