CurbIf you check out Lee Brice‘s fifth studio album, Hey World, you’ll find huge hits like “One of Them Girls” and “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” his duet with Carly Pearce — and what’s likely some of the best singing of his career.
Ironically, the COVID-19 pandemic is to thank, since the virus made it safer to work at home than going to a studio.
“I had to do all the vocals myself at my house,” Lee tells ABC Audio, “like engineer… have the mic here, sitting in front of the computer, hit play, record…”
“And then I got to sing like how I wanted to sing it,” he explains. “Nobody was telling me, ‘You should maybe do it like this, or try to scoop like that or whatever.’ I just got to sing it how Lee Brice would sing it.”
“And so these probably are my favorite vocals I’ve ever recorded,” he laughs. “They might not be the best, but they’re my favorite.”
Lee also had a hand in writing most of the album’s 15 tracks, save for the duet and three others.
“We did not write ‘Lies,’ which is kind of an ‘I Drive Your Truck’ special,” he says, “like if you hear that song, you’ve got to record it.”
“I did not write ‘Country Knows,'” he continues, “which I wish I would have.”
“And then ‘Soul’ was like one that was this different kind of thing I heard,” he remembers. “You should have heard the demo. I mean, it was way, way weird and out of the box. But I was like, ‘There’s something to that, that I guarantee you we can make into something really cool.'”
Lee’s new single is a track he did help write, the ballad “Memory I Don’t Mess With.”
