Sentencing is set for this afternoon for a convicted Columbia killer who’s seeking a new trial.

A Boone County jury convicted 42-year-old Bobby Dawson of first degree murder and armed criminal action in August, for the 2020 shooting death of Rod Jones on Quail drive.

The Columbia Police Department’s probable cause statement says residential surveillance video shows Dawson pulling up on Quail drive and then striking the victim with a gun. Court documents indicate that Jones then fled behind a building with the suspect pursuing him. Boone County prosecutors say Dawson then shot Jones behind the building, with several citizens nearby.

Dawson’s attorney, Ashland’s Matthew Uhrig, has filed a seven-page motion in Boone County Circuit Court seeking a new trial. Boone County Circuit Judge Joshua Calvin Devine will sentence Dawson this afternoon at 1. Dawson is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Look for Judge Devine to take up the request for a new trial, before the sentencing.
