“Nowhere to Hide” is the upcoming release (January 29th) from Craig Market and Thomm Jutz. It is reminiscent of the classic 1987 Rounder recording of Blake and Rice in that it covers some familiar ground in acoustic music with its share of train and road songs and its instrumentation. It is also, in many ways, more accessible. It is much less a bluegrass album, lacking the fast picking style often associated with the genre, and is more of a showcase for fine singing, playing, and songwriting. This is real, authentic music in its simplest form, voice and guitar.
Apart, Thomm Jutz and Craig Market have been very successful in acoustic and roots music. Market has over 100 cuts with artists like Dan Tyminski, Mac Wiseman, Ronnie Bowman, Lonesome River Band, and Blue Highway and Jutz is a songwriter and producer who has played and worked with artists such as Todd Snider, Nanci Griffith, Mary Gauthier, and David Olney. Nowhere to Hide finds the pair joining forces, writing and producing a fine acoustic recording that manages to showcase the considerable talents of both of them together.
Written over 3 years, the 12 original songs were recorded over 12 days in Jutzs’ studio. The project showcases Market’s fine tenor singing over some very tasteful and technical flat picking that frankly these guys make sound very easy.
Market’s 1937 Martin D18 and Jutz’s 1948 Martin D18 playing out of separate channels give the project a dsitict sound. Players and Gear nuts will enjoy listening to the sonic differences of these two fine instruments and the different playing styles of Market and Jutz. This is a comfortable feeling record that at times will have you going back in time and one that you will want to listen to again and again.
