Gabrielle Union posts powerful #TimesUp message to mark the 25th anniversary of her rape

ABC Image Group LA(LOS ANGELES) — Gabrielle Union has a special message for the victims of the sexual harassment and abuse: #TimesUp.

In a heartfelt message on Monday, Union shared her thoughts on the #TimesUp initiative, which helps to promote equality and safety in the workplace.

“#TimesUp #WhyWeWearBlack This year marked the 25th anniversary of my rape,” Union wrote, captioning a makeup free selfie of herself on Instagram. “#MeToo I know I am not alone.”

Union, who first shared her story in 2014 on The View, was raped at gunpoint at age nineteen while working at a shoe store. Union later revisited the traumatic incident in her 2017 memoir, We’re Going to Need More Wine.

Union continued, “Together we can eradicate sexual violence, harassment and abuse. Together we can have true equality. Together we can dismantle white supremacy and racism. Together we can center the voices of the most marginalized among us.”

Recognizing the shift in Hollywood and the fact that women are now speaking out more than ever, Union then added, “Together we can acknowledge the jig is up and its BEEN time for monumental sweeping change.  #TimesUpNow.”
