The number is expected to increase to about $34 million over the four-day Martin Luther King weekend.
Steven Spielberg’s The Post — starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep — grabbed second place with an estimated $18.6 million over the three-day after expanding nationwide. Its total through Monday is expected to surpass $22 million.
Liam Neeson’s The Commuter bowed in third place with an estimated $13.45 million three-day total, which should swell to around $16 million over the after the Monday holiday.
Fourth place belonged to Insidious: The Last Key, with an estimated $12.1 million over the three-day, and a chance to finish near $14 million through Monday.
Rounding out the top five was The Greatest Showman, delivering an estimated $11.8 million from Friday through Sunday and around $14 million over the four-day.
Besides delivering an estimated $11.27 million for the three-day weekend, with expectations of about $14.7 million over the four-day, Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi will top $1.265 billion worldwide, overtaking Disney’s Beauty and the Beast as the 10th largest worldwide release of all-time. Lucasfilm and ABC are owned by Disney.
