Scotty McCreery immortalizes both his grandfathers with his first #1 song

Thirty TigersScotty McCreery notches the first #1 of his country career this week with “Five More Minutes,” a song he wrote early, as he created the album that would become Seasons Change.

“It was February 5, I’m pretty sure, of 2015,” he recalls. “And it was like my third write of the entire… writing process for the next project.”

“It was just a couple of weeks after I lost my granddaddy,” Scotty explains. “And we were talking about how, you lose somebody and then you just wish you had another day… And I had a few things I would’ve liked to have told my granddaddy.”

Though “Five More Minutes” came to life shortly after the passing of his paternal grandfather, the North Carolina native says for him, the song is about the men who raised both of his parents.

“For my Granddaddy R.P., my mama’s daddy, fishing was kind of our thing,” Scotty says. “He’d take us out on the boat. He was very big on building his own stuff and fixing his own engines. And we were out on the boat, you know, a few times where the engine would break down and we’d have to flag somebody down to get it. But it was his boat, and we did a lot of fishing.”

You’ll find footage of both of Scotty’s grandparents in the music video for the song.

“Me and Granddaddy Bill, our favorite thing to do was golf,” he continues. “He lived in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and that’s kind of like the golf capital of the world. So in his retirement, he was just a ranger at a course down there, and we’d ride around and play golf together. So, I loved that.”

“Five More Minutes” is the lead single from Seasons Change, which comes out March 16.
