"Alright, the celebration’s starting tonight!": Michael Ray’s 30th birthday surprise

AtlanticMichael Ray bid farewell to his twenties this past weekend, as the “Think a Little Less” hitmaker officially turned 30 on Sunday. The celebration, however, started last week in Chicago, thanks to a covert operation organized by his band and his family.

The Florida native started to suspect something was up as he was onstage playing his set at Joe’s on Weed.

“My team, my band, they pulled a fast one,” Michael explains. “We were in the middle of the show, and we have a spot in the show where it’s acoustic, and I look over and I see my band standing side-stage… And I’m like, ‘My band normally is just making drinks right now. They’re never watching this portion of the show.'”

“So I see ’em walking out,” he continues. “I see my tour manager with a cake and then my dad’s there. That’s when I know, it’s like, ‘Alright, the celebration’s starting tonight!'”

Michael’s dad spent the rest of the weekend with his son on the road. Even though Michael squeezed in a little work on his big day, he still gives the thirties high marks so far.

“Sunday, I played a benefit with John Rich and Drake White and RaeLynn… at [Rich’s home] Mt. Richmore, all to benefit St. Jude,” he tells ABC Radio. “And then that night, we went and watched the [Nashville Predators] win in double overtime. So, it was solid. It was a solid way to bring in the thirties, yeah!”

Michael’s latest single, “Get to You,” is currently making its way in country’s top 20. It’s the lead release from his new album, Amos, which comes out June 1.
