"Friends Don’t," but siblings do: Maddie Marlow co-opts her sister’s love life for Maddie & Tae’s new song

Mercury NashvilleMaddie & Tae‘s autobiographical new single, “Friends Don’t,” explores the possibility that a friendship could turn into something more.

But the inspiration didn’t come from the CMA-winning duo’s own lives. Instead, Maddie Marlow confesses it was based on something that happened to her sister.

“She was telling me about this situation with this guy where they’re just friends in the beginning, and then there’s just a little gut feeling,” Maddie explains. “She’s like, ‘I think he’s into me, but I don’t know.’ And she was telling me all these things that I don’t think friends do, just friends.”

“Right,” Tae Dye agrees.

“And she’s like, ‘Yeah, he took me to this restaurant,'” Maddie continues. “I’m like, ‘That’s not a friendly date.’ And she’s like, ‘He bought me this.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s not friendly either.’ So I was like, ‘Friends don’t do any of that kind of stuff.'”

Maddie’s sister may have inspired “Friends Don’t,” but she didn’t end up with any of the writing credit. That means she may be due a special treat from her sister.

“You know what? What I’m gonna do is when this song is really big, I’m just gonna buy her something awesome,” Maddie decides, as Tae laughs. “Because I probably do her a royalty, ya know?”

“Friends Don’t” is the lead single from Maddie & Tae’s forthcoming sophomore album, their first for Universal Nashville.
