"Songs for the Saints:" Kenny Chesney crafted his latest album in the eye of the storm

Blue Chair/Warner Bros. NashvilleNot only is Kenny Chesney donating all of his proceeds from the Songs for the Saints album to hurricane relief in the Virgin Islands, but the project was actually recorded in the aftermath of the storm.

He explains, “I was literally in the studio recording these songs and singing on these songs as we were flying medical supplies to hospitals down there…As we were flying people that I didn’t even know off the island, whether they were pregnant or had emergency medical issues or if they were just friends that I wanted to get off the island.”

The superstar from East Tennessee admits he’s never made a record under such emotional circumstances.

“It was just such a stressful time,” Kenny says. “I’ve never been in the studio trying to create and make a record with that kind of stress. I was in there singing and I had friends on my plane flying back to my house. I was just so scared for them. I do think you can hear all of that stress and anxiety in it.”

Songs for the Saints is new in stores and online today. The set’s first single, “Get Along,” is spending its second week at #1. This weekend, Kenny takes his Trip Around the Sun Tour to Chicago’s Soldier Field.
