The commander of Columbia’s American Legion Post 202 is praising the Columbia-based Veterans United Foundation for its recent surprise gift of $10,000. Herbert Williams American Legion Post 202 commander Dale Roberts says the post’s 280 members and their families are thankful. He tells 939 the Eagle that the money will be put to good use.

“The top one of my list is our bathrooms are not ADA-accessible. (Americans With Disabilities Act). And, goodness, we’re a veterans organization. Of all places, to not be fully ADA-accessible, we need to fix that,” Mr. Roberts says.

He notes the VU Foundation also contributed $100,000 in 2021 to replace their 60-year-old roof and donated another $1,000 in 2022 for the Legion’s garden project.

Mr. Roberts says some of his members gasped, when the VU Foundation surprised them with the gift. Veterans United Foundation team leader Michelle Benke tells 939 the Eagle that VU employees believe in the American Legion.

“We have employees that work at Veterans United who really rallied together. They believe in the Legion and their mission and what they stand for. And we had heard that they had some wish list items of things that they really wanted to get done,” Ms. Benke says.

Benke says that in all of the surprise visits they’ve done, it’s the first time they’ve had a standing ovation. Mr. Roberts says his members were speechless when they saw the check.
