Boone County Fire Protection District investigators credit a dog’s persistent barking in waking up the homeowners during Saturday morning’s blaze that destroyed a home in the 5200 block of South Cowan road, near Highway 63.

The Boone County Fire Protection District responded to the call at about 8:50 on Saturday morning, and arrived to find fire in the garage and shooting through the roof of a single-story home. Firefighters say strong winds created a “blow torch effect” that extended the fire through the attic and throughout the house.

No injuries are reported. The Boone County Fire Protection District responded with 20 firefighters, three engines, two tankers and other equipment, and the Columbia Fire Department assisted with a quint and four firefighters.

Reporter Euphenie Andre  from our news partner KMIZ was at the fire scene all morning Saturday, and reports damage to the home is estimated at $750,000. The fire’s cause remains under investigation.
