The Columbia Public Schools (CPS) superintendent is encouraging you to get to Mizzou Arena this afternoon, to cheer on the Rock Bridge girls basketball team as they face St. Louis powerhouse Incarnate Word in the class 6 semifinals. The game will tip off at 4 pm, and you’ll see CPS Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood in the stands cheering Coach Jill Nagel and her Bruins on.

“The young women have done a fantastic job. Their coaches have definitely shown us that it can be done, what’s possible. And for me I will be there rooting for them because we want (Missouri) state championships. We want to bring it home,” Dr. Yearwood tells 939 the Eagle.

The Bruins are 25-5, beating Staley 42-39 in last Friday’s class 6 quarterfinals. The Red Knights have the nation’s longest winning streak: 129 straight games. They are coached by Dan Rolfes, who’s won 12 Missouri state championships at Incarnate Word. They are led by junior Nevaeh Caffey, who’s verbally committed to play college hoops at Indiana.

Rock Bridge is the last team to beat them in early 2020 in the Webster Groves Classic. The Bruins are coached by the great Jill Nagel and are led by sophomore sensation Jayda Porter and shooter Mari Miller. Superintendent Yearwood is proud of the Rock Bridge girls and of his district:

“Always proud of what we’re doing here in CPS. Proud of our teachers, our staff. Proud of the community support we’ve always had,” says Dr. Yearwood.

You can listen to today’s broadcast on Zimmer sister station KTGR (FM 100.5 and FM 105.1). Andy Humphrey will have the call, with pregame coverage starting at 3:45.
