Columbia’s city council has unanimously approved a proposed new single-lane roundabout at busy Fairview and Chapel Hill.

The council held a public hearing Monday night, before the vote. City manager De’Carlon Seewood recommended approval of the $1.2 million project. It was on the list of projects approved by Columbia voters in 2015 as part of the capital improvement sales tax extension. The council decided not to proceed with the roundabout in 2016, due to concerns or opposition from residents in that area.

Columbia Public Works says a roundabout improvement at Fairview and Chapel Hill would make the intersection more efficient at all times of the day for all modes of travel. Mayor Barbara Buffaloe joined us live on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri”, telling listeners that this is a safety issue. She also notes there are daycares in that area.

Construction is expected to start in 2026.
