#OscarsSoPolitical: Will Jimmy Kimmel take on #MeToo while hosting the Academy Awards this Sunday?

ABC/Jeff Lipsky(HOLLYWOOD) — Jimmy Kimmel hosts the 90th Annual Academy Awards this Sunday night on ABC. When fellow late night host Seth Meyers hosted the Golden Globes in January, he mentioned the #MeToo movement and Hollywood’s sexual misconduct scandals quite a bit. But Kimmel says he’s focused on avoiding any unpleasantness.

Speaking on ABC’s Good Morning America Tuesday, he told ABC’s Paula Faris, “This show is not about reliving people’s sexual assaults. It’s an award show for people who have been dreaming about maybe winning an Oscar for their whole lives.”

He added, “The last thing I wanna do is ruin that for someone who is nominated for Best Leading Actress  — or Best Supporting or Best Director or Cinematographer or whatever — by making it unpleasant.”

But that doesn’t means the topic is completely off limits…and neither is politics.

Kimmel, who’s very outspoken politically on his talk show, feels that it’s “almost necessary” these days for late night talk show hosts to discuss serious topics.  He says when people ask him “Who are you to talk about politics?” he has a simple response.

“I’m an American, that’s who I am,” says Kimmel. “A lot of people are going with this line of reasoning where they say, ‘People in show business shouldn’t speak out about politics’ and yet, they elected Donald Trump the president of the United States. So I think that argument has pretty well jumped out the window.”

Controversial material aside, Kimmel says he’ll know if he’s bombing Sunday night because “the Internet will tell me.”  As for whether he’s doing a good job or not, he says, “If I see people laughing, I’ll feel good about it.”

The 90th Annual Academy Awards air live on ABC Sunday night starting at 8 p.m. ET.
