One of Columbia’s favorite Christmas holiday season traditions begins this (Tuesday) evening: the Veterans United Home Loans holiday light spectacular.

The event begins tonight and runs each night through December 17 from 7 to 10:30 at VU’s main campus on Veterans United drive, near South Providence. VU spokesman Chad Moller notes this is the event’s fourth year.

“We’re just excited to have a chance to lift the spirits of the community during the holiday season,” Moller says.

Mr. Moller tells 939 the Eagle that the driving route is a mile long around the Veterans United campus complex, adding that it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to drive through the entire show. He says the traffic flow accommodates about 1,000 vehicles per evening. Moller says Columbia Police will be assisting with traffic flow each evening, adding that VU will have additional onsite staff to direct traffic within the drive to ensure traffic flows properly.

“Traffic usually is pretty bunched up on the front end of that window every night, so if you can wait until a little bit later it’s usually a little less tricky to get into the complex. But I know that’s tough for the kids too. You want to bring your kids and let them see it. So parents and families with young kids, they want to come on the front end,” Moller says.

VU says the display consists of LED lights and will feature a variety of two and three-dimensional displays that are the equivalent to more than one-million bulb lights.
